General Properties : Fluoropolymers are a unique
class of macromolecules with unmatched thermal, electrical, chemical
as well as mechanical properties. These remarkable features of fluorocarbon
polymers are attributed to its very high bond energy between carbon
and fluorine atom. Moreover, the high performance of fluoropolymer
is extended over a wide temperature range from extremely low to
extremely high. Special features of fluoropolymers are: |
-
Electrical Reliability: A low dielectric constant and dissipation
factor and high dielectric strength over a wide range of frequencies
and temperature.
-
Chemical Inertness: Excellent resistance to almost all chemicals,
an excellent water and oil repellant for non-stick character.
-
Mechanical Strength: Outstanding durability and fatigue resistance,
excellent resistance to abrasion and cut through.
-
Excellent Thermal Stability: Excellent upper and lower service
temperature, retention of properties after heat ageing is excellent
over a wide temperature range (-200°C + 200°C).
-
Long-term Weatherability: Excellent resistance to ozone, sunlight
and weather.
-
Non Flammability: Will not burn in atmosphere, very high oxygen
index, and low flame spread and smoke generation.
The inherent characteristic of fluoropolymers (Table-1)
enables a cable designer to manufacture cables with the following
outstanding features:
i) Small size, lighter in weight and much higher performance reliability
ii) Suitable for wide frequency range and over wide temperature
range (-200°C + 200°C)
iii) Flame resistant
iv) Soldering iron resistant and suitable for high density wiring
v) Resistance to ultraviolet radiation and stress cracking
vi) Resistance to hazardous environments especially at elevated
temperatures.

Application & Market : Owing to the wide
range of flexibility in the properties of fluoropolymers there is
considerable overlap in the application of various fluorinated polymer
resins. Where more than one member of the family of fluoropolymer
meet the properties of the end product, the cost of the finished
product dictates the choice of the raw-material.
Some general application areas are:
-
Electronics: Hook-Up Wire; wire wrap connection; electronic
equipments for aircraft, radar,
navigation, data cable, radio frequency cables.
-
Industry: Thermocouple extensions; motor and generator leads,
hook-up wires, solid state
control instruments, heater cables and lead cables for high
temperature zones.
-
Power Station: High radiation areas such as nuclear power stations.
-
Exploration: Oil-rigs; electro-logging cables.
-
Defence: Air-craft wiring, wiring of battle tanks.
-
Transportation: Sub-way-Metro railway installations
-
